Before you choose this build

This project defines enclosure joinery, panel layout and service access. It is not a habitable room, structural certification or a recommendation for a savannah monitor or any other animal. The 69-inch clear frame height will require many adults to stoop.

Before you start

  • Confirm that the keeper can enter, turn, service the enclosure and leave safely through the proposed opening. If safe entry requires greater headroom or width, redesign before buying materials rather than accepting an unsuitable doorway.
  • A competent assessment must establish floor support, anchorage, room ventilation and any applicable building or fire requirements. This shell cannot support a person, ceiling storage or suspended heavy equipment.
  • Dimensions use actual 1.5-inch-square timber. The outside footprint includes the frame, while hinges and handles may project. Existing room flooring remains the supporting surface; decorative floor sheets carry no independent load.

This is an original construction guide assembled from the references below. This exact project has not been physically built or independently load-tested by The Creature Corner. Follow the current instructions for the products you buy.

Resolve safe access first

Tape the 33-inch-wide doorway and 69-inch-high opening at full scale. Include the 1.5-inch bottom threshold. Test the service route without building an obstruction. Specify an inside release and an outside hold-open device. If the keeper cannot use this opening safely, change the design before fabrication.

Prepare the approved location

Mark the footprint on the assessed floor and keep the room's exits, ventilation and required equipment clearances available. Confirm the anchorage method with someone qualified to assess the existing construction. Do not drill into a floor or wall before hidden services and permitted fixing locations are established.

Cut and finish the structural stock

Cut matching rails together and label every part. Dry-fit the selected connectors and verify their screws suit 1.5-inch timber without exposed points. Prepare timber according to the coating manufacturer's instructions. Apply the finish to all faces and allow the full specified cure before trapping surfaces behind panels.

Build the upper and lower rings

Place each pair of 69-inch rails between two 72-inch rails. Clamp, compare diagonals and fasten with the scheduled connection sets. Both completed rings must measure 72 inches square. Keep them flat during assembly. Add the specified corner plates before raising a ring onto uprights.

Stand and brace the wall frame

Fit the four corner uprights between the rings, then add a center upright to the rear and each side. Use temporary bracing and assistance while positioning the upper ring. The ring and upright stack is 1.5 + 69 + 1.5 inches. Complete the approved restraint arrangement before removing temporary braces.

Set the doorway jambs

Measure across the front from its left outside edge. Set the left jamb's left face at 18 inches and the right jamb's left face at 52.5 inches. Their inside faces then define a 33-inch opening. The two side openings are each 16.5 inches wide. Check these measurements at the top and bottom.

Divide the wall panels

Fit the six 33.75-inch midrails between corner and center uprights. Place their lower faces 35.25 inches above the floor, leaving 33.75-inch clear openings above and below. Set the two 16.5-inch front midrails at the same elevation. Check each opening before cutting the panel blanks to final size.

Divide the removable roof

Fit the 69-inch roof divider between front and rear upper rails. Center it across the shell, then fit the two 33.75-inch cross-dividers between it and the side rails. This makes four 33.75-inch square openings. Use the specified connectors and clearly mark that the roof must never be stepped on or used for storage.

Fit walls without rigidly trapping sheet

Install compatible gaskets and screw-fixed capture beads around the wall openings. The listed blanks allow nominal 0.125-inch edge clearance, which must increase if the actual panel manufacturer's movement guidance requires it. Keep smooth faces inward and protect cut edges. Make at least one lower panel readily removable for inspection.

Build the service door

Join the two 68.75-inch stiles with three 29.75-inch rails. Fit the approved infill, checking that it cannot be pushed out of its retainers. Hang the 32.75 × 68.75-inch door in the 33 × 69-inch opening with nominal 0.125-inch reveals. Confirm its full swing clears the room and enclosure contents.

Install releases and secure closure

Fit all three hinges and both latches. Test release from inside while a helper remains outside and the enclosure is empty. The keeper must not need a key, loose tool or another person's help. Resolve any conflict between animal-proof hardware and emergency release before use; a padlock across an occupied doorway is unacceptable.

Install the supported wear floor

Lay the two floor sheets within the bottom ring, leaving the specified movement gaps. Use removable smooth covers over joints where necessary to prevent trapping. These sheets are a replaceable wearing surface, not a waterproof pan. Keep access to the underlying floor for inspection and use separate approved containers for water.

Fit ventilation and services

Install retained roof cassettes and protected wall vents sized through the separate environmental plan. Support lamps and substantial furniture from independently approved mounts. Follow equipment clearances and protect cables from the animal. Do not modify building wiring, HVAC, fire protection or existing structural members as part of this enclosure assembly.

Rehearse service and commission

With no animal present, rehearse entry, door release, tray removal and an equipment shutdown. Run the intended environment through repeated day and night cycles while measuring several locations. Inspect concealed edges after the cleaning trial. Resolve overheating, condensation, unstable fittings or restricted escape before the shell is considered ready for further husbandry assessment.

Final construction checks

  • Confirm the actual clear doorway and interior dimensions, threshold visibility and free inside release with both latches engaged.
  • Check all panels and mesh for escape gaps and accessible sharp hardware. Inspect the approved anchorage and supporting floor.
  • Rehearse entry, door release, maintenance access and equipment shutdown with the enclosure empty.

Before introducing an animal

  • Document environmental measurements through repeated day and night cycles. Successful shell assembly alone does not authorize animal occupancy.
  • Use the exact animal’s care guide to select the heating, lighting and furnishings. Run the complete setup, record measurements at the places the animal will use and resolve any unmet requirements before move-in.

Review your preparation checklist

Maintain and inspect the enclosure

  • Test the inside release before entering, and keep the doorway clear during every service visit.
  • Inspect connectors, removable floor joints, concealed moisture and panel movement regularly. Empty the shell before repairing or relocating it.

Limitations and decisions to resolve

  • The low headroom is a material limitation. This design is not suitable where safe keeper entry cannot be demonstrated.
  • No structural load capacity, building approval, deep-substrate resistance or species suitability is established. It is not a general savannah-monitor housing recommendation.
