Dimensions describe the timber frame, excluding hardware projections. Framing, tray, furniture and equipment clearances reduce usable space. Specify ventilation, adult space and practical climbing routes through the separate species plan.

Before you start

  • Check adult turning space and retreats within the furnished 36-inch depth. Confirm major furnishings can pass through the planned access.
  • Actual frame stock is 1.5 inches square. Upper and lower rings are 48 × 36 inches, and 69-inch uprights between them produce the 72-inch height.
  • Arrange an anti-tip fixing approved for the actual wall or base before installing doors or branches. Do not assume decorative plasterboard anchors are adequate.
  • Choose infill for the animal and documented material temperature limits. Assess mesh for humidity retention and contact abrasion.

Set the furnishing and service layout

Draw the frame, furniture and retreats from the front and side. Keep a removal route through the doors. Locate the warm area and cooler retreats from the care plan, using branches to provide purposeful accessible routes.

Prepare the installation base

Confirm the floor supports the completed enclosure and arrange the approved anti-tip fixing. The tray sits on that base inside the lower ring; it is not suspended from mesh or thin PVC. Check the door swing and ceiling clearance before cutting. Keep a route open for removing the empty enclosure from the room later.

Build matching rectangular rings

Build two rings with 48-inch front and rear rails and 33-inch rails between them. Clamp flat, compare diagonals and fasten the butt joints with suitable plates and specified screws. Mark both front edges to preserve orientation.

Add uprights and temporary braces

Install the four corner uprights between the rings, followed by the centred front and rear uprights. The frame should finish 72 inches high. Add temporary diagonal braces while tightening permanent corner connections. Check plumb in both directions. Apply the approved anti-tip arrangement now, before the swinging doors or furniture introduce uneven forces.

Install dedicated furniture rails

Mount rear rails inboard, with their rear faces against the interior faces of the rear posts. Brackets support their ends; center-post fixings support the middle without notching the upright. Offset side rails inward similarly, at heights clear of rear rails. These projections reduce usable space. Confirm furniture loads and bracket capacity separately.

Form the lower front sill

Install each 21.75-inch sill crossrail with its top 12 inches above the lower ring’s top face. This leaves a 57-inch clear upper opening for the doors. Fit the lower infill beneath the rails using removable capture beads. Keep the sill low enough for practical tray removal and do not pile substrate against an unsupported thin panel.

Protect and cure the timber

Sand and finish the frame before fitting infill. Confirm compatibility with timber, humidity and cleaners, including concealed ends and drilled holes. Follow the manufacturer's complete service-cure and washing instructions; surface dryness alone does not establish readiness.

Fit the rear and side panels

Fit separate rear panels on either side of the center post, then fit the side panels. Capture them within the frame depth using fixed stops, removable beads and compatible gaskets. Leave supplier-required movement space. Furniture rails remain inboard of the sheets. Aquarium-labeled silicone is not automatically compatible with PVC, acrylic or polycarbonate.

Build and hang the narrow doors

Assemble the two 21.5-by-56.75-inch doors with a middle rail in each. Fit three hinges per door according to their specified mounting pattern. Add positive latches at top and bottom so a tall corner cannot spring outward. Close the reveals with appropriate stops or gaskets while retaining smooth opening and reliable closure.

Install the top and ventilation details

Mechanically capture the selected roof infill and provide deliberate, secured access for any service opening. Choose ventilation locations and free area through the species plan, then measure their performance during commissioning. Fit removable mesh screens over every vent and cable passage. Avoid making a large unframed hole in the top for a lamp dome.

Fit the tray and inspect its perimeter

Set the removable tray on the approved base and verify it can be lifted out through the available access. Close accessible perimeter gaps with smooth removable covers that do not trap the tray permanently. The tray is for the selected substrate and cleaning regime, not a reservoir. Keep any drainage arrangement visible and separately approved by its manufacturer.

Attach climbing furniture mechanically

Fasten each branch to the dedicated rails using properly fitted collars or brackets and backing plates. Keep end grain, loose bark and decayed sections out of critical joints. Provide more than one secure attachment where rotation is possible. Check the planned load with the fitting supplier; do not stand on branches or use the animal as a proof load.

Fit guarded equipment and cable entries

Use independently supported lighting and the fixtures’ required guards and clearances. Keep cords outside animal access and secure probes against displacement. Cable passages must close tightly around the actual cables without crushing them. Use only intact listed equipment on suitable protected outlets; this guide contains no mains wiring or heater fabrication instructions.

Rehearse cleaning and animal retrieval

Without an animal, rehearse removing the largest branch, tray and retreat. Check access to every attachment bolt and practice opening one door while the other stays latched. Correct pinch points and inaccessible areas before adding planting.

Commission the furnished enclosure

Operate the full setup without an animal through repeated day and night cycles. Measure conditions at actual branch surfaces and retreats, including places closest to fixtures. Recheck fastening after humidity changes and repeat the door-corner gap inspection. Occupancy requires stable furniture, secure access and measurements that meet the separately chosen animal-care requirements.

Final construction checks

  • Record branch weights, connection hardware and the responsible load assessment. Confirm anti-tip protection before opening both doors together.
  • Inspect every vent, top corner, door edge and tray gap with an animal-appropriate rigid gauge. Check that no accessible fastener or mesh edge is sharp.

Before introducing an animal

  • Measure the occupied branch locations rather than relying on air readings near a thermometer mounted on the wall.
  • Recorded conditions at branches and retreats must meet the separately chosen animal-care requirements.
  • Use the exact animal’s care guide to select the heating, lighting and furnishings. Run the complete setup, record measurements at the places the animal will use and resolve any unmet requirements before move-in.

Review your preparation checklist

Maintain and inspect the enclosure

  • Inspect branch collars and door latches regularly, especially after removing furnishings or changing humidity. Replace damaged timber rather than hiding it with foam.
  • Keep a record of panel removal order and inspect behind removable liners for moisture. Secure the animal elsewhere before structural repairs or recoating.

Limitations and decisions to resolve

  • The frame is not rated for large trees, heavy stone backgrounds, hanging water containers or human climbing. Furniture capacity must be checked separately.
  • The title does not establish suitability for chameleons, arboreal monitors or any other particular reptile.
