Before you choose this build
The outside frame is 96 x 48 inches. Walls stand 22.5 inches high and lids add 1.5 inches; clamps and hardware project beyond them. Internal plywood reduces usable space. These project dimensions do not establish tortoise suitability.
Before you start
- Confirm the animal’s adult space, climate and digging requirements before choosing this footprint. A larger number in a project title does not establish husbandry suitability.
- The pen must be reachable from both long sides. Four narrow lids reduce the lifted weight but do not make a four-foot reach comfortable or safe for every keeper.
- All frame members are 1.5 inches square. Long-side cassettes are 48 inches wide; end cassettes are 45 inches wide and fit between the long sides. The lining is 0.5 inch thick.
- Plan a continuous perimeter barrier independently of removable wall joints. A panel may be unbolted only after the animal has been moved to secure accommodation.

Draw the panel arrangement
Divide the front and rear at 48 inches, placing both 45-inch ends between them. Number the six cassettes and mark their outside faces. These divisions identify removable construction sections; the center remains one continuous space.

Establish the independent ground barrier
Select the ground barrier for the animal, soil and predators. A preliminary 39-inch mesh skirt reserves 3 inches above grade for wall clamps, 12 inches downward and 24 outward. Join lengths with six-inch overlaps and mechanical connections. Specify a different barrier where needed, continuing it beneath every panel joint and future connection.

Prepare the perimeter foundation
Clear utilities before excavating and establish a firm, draining perimeter at the same level. Do not install a raised planter filled with extra soil inside these low panels. Ground fixings and any footing detail depend on site conditions and must be selected separately. Reserve exterior space around the entire pen for inspecting the buried barrier line.

Assemble four long cassettes
For each cassette, fit three 19.5-inch uprights between two 48-inch rails, at the ends and midpoint. Clamp square and connect the butt joints with external plates and specified screws. Compare diagonals before final tightening. The cut lengths do not allow for housed joints.

Assemble the shorter end cassettes
Use the same upright length between 45-inch rails to make the two end panels. Keep every rail orientation consistent so corresponding bolt faces meet squarely. Dry-stand all six pieces on a flat surface with temporary braces. Measure the complete 96-by-48-inch envelope and resolve errors before drilling the permanent connecting holes.

Drill the removable connections
Use three bolt positions at each of the six panel junctions, spaced away from end grain and other fasteners. Clamp mating members together and drill through both in one setup so the holes align. Fit washers under bolt heads and nuts. Place exposed threads outside, then trim or cap them without damaging the locking-nut engagement.

Fit the smooth internal lining
Install long-side liners first, beginning 1.5 inches from each external end so they clear the end frames. Their central edges meet at the 48-inch cassette joint. Fit the 44-inch end liners between the front and rear lining faces. Cover each meeting edge with a removable smooth strip; the strip must not conceal loose bolts or sharp corners.

Make the panels weather resistant
Remove the lining and coat timber, plywood faces, edges and holes with the selected compatible exterior system. Follow its specified preparation, coverage and complete cure conditions. Keep any preservative or coating unsuitable for animal contact inaccessible. Do not seal wet timber between impermeable layers, because future decay would then be difficult to discover during routine inspections.

Join the shell on the prepared site
Set the six cassettes on the prepared perimeter, bolt them together and square the footprint again. Connect the continuous barrier to the wall bases with covered mechanical clamps. Fit separately specified ground restraints. Record the connector locations in a sketch so an individual panel can later be replaced without unknowingly opening an escape route.

Build four manageable lids
Assemble four 23.8125-by-48-inch frames using the listed stiles and three crossrails apiece. The middle crossrail stiffens each mesh panel and supports its clamp line. Make the frames square and flat, then weigh a finished sample before purchasing or setting its stays. Do not assume a hardware rating for a larger lid applies to this mounting geometry.

Close the seams beneath the lids
Fit the three 45-inch supports beneath the planned lid gaps with their top faces flush with the wall rails. Centre the broad face of each support under its seam and attach it with suitable brackets at both ends. These supports prevent an open route beneath the gaps; they do not certify the roof for snow or human weight.

Clamp mesh and mount the hardware
Capture the perimeter and middle line of each mesh blank beneath smooth strips. Install two hinges and two locking latches per lid, then add positive stays. Close neighbouring lids in different orders to find collisions. Look from inside toward daylight and inspect each hinge corner, since apparently tight top surfaces can still conceal a side opening.

Install separate weather protection
Provide shelters and shade suitable for the animal, with drainage paths that remain visible. Any solid weather roof needs its own wind and rainfall assessment, separate from these mesh lids. Keep shelters removable and away from corners that could become climbing steps. Do not use a heat lamp or temporary extension lead to compensate for unsuitable outdoor weather.

Test the maintenance sequence empty
With no animal present, open one lid, remove a shelter and reach the opposite wall from each service side. Practise isolating the pen and replacing a cassette using temporary external bracing. Return every bolt and edge cover to its marked position. This rehearsal should expose an inaccessible nut or trapped liner before the enclosure is occupied.

Measure and document conditions
Run the complete enclosure empty through the weather expected during use. Record shaded and exposed temperatures, shelter dryness and ground drainage. Check panel alignment after rain and after the ground dries again. Occupancy begins only after the measured conditions meet the separate species plan and the animal can be retrieved safely from every position.
Final construction checks
- Verify six closed panel junctions, three protected lid seams and eight engaged lid latches. Keep the barrier continuous beneath every cassette.
- Use a rigid gauge chosen for the particular animal to inspect openings without pushing a live animal against them. Replace weak attachments instead of adding a cosmetic strip.
- Keep an accessible record of all finishes and hardware used.
Before introducing an animal
- Confirm ready indoor accommodation and a storm procedure.
- Recorded shaded and exposed conditions, shelter dryness and drainage must meet the separate species plan before occupancy.
- Use the exact animal’s care guide to select the heating, lighting and furnishings. Run the complete setup, record measurements at the places the animal will use and resolve any unmet requirements before move-in.
Maintain and inspect the enclosure
- Check bolts for movement and washers for compression at the start of each outdoor season. Inspect soil settlement and any exposed barrier edges after heavy rain.
- Move the animal indoors before replacing a module. A temporary open seam is not safe merely because the remaining five panels are still bolted together.
Limitations and decisions to resolve
- The modular structure is not a retaining wall, certified predator barrier or rated roof. Expansion requires a new perimeter, support and husbandry review.
- No cohabitation, overwintering or heating recommendation follows from the four-lid arrangement.
