The dimensions describe the timber frame, excluding projecting hardware. The liner tolerates appropriate humid service only when its material and installation are suitable. It is a removable splash lining, not a watertight aquarium or a substitute for room moisture control.

Before you start

  • Use this project where damaged or worn lining must be replaceable without discarding the frame. Confirm that each panel can leave through the doors or removable roof before arranging furniture.
  • Select the exact PVC product with its supplier for temperature, cleaning, accessible animal contact and mechanical fixing. Expanded PVC is not interchangeable with every solid PVC sheet or exterior trim board.
  • The geometry assumes actual 1.5-inch-square timber and nominal 0.25-inch PVC. Keep the entire assembly on a level assessed base. No heavy furnishing, deep substrate or water-container capacity is established here.

Establish the support and removal route

Mark the footprint on a level approved base. Include the actual intended contents in its support assessment. Confirm that the top can be removed and both doors fully opened where the enclosure will stand. Reserve space for external equipment and for withdrawing panels without touching a hot lamp.

Check the selected PVC

Read the specific sheet's fabrication and temperature guidance. Obtain suitable gasket and retainer materials for the expected exposure. Do not assume a sealant marketed for aquariums bonds PVC or viewing plastic. The referenced Loctite product, for example, excludes several such plastics. This design relies on mechanical retention.

Cut and label the timber

Measure actual stock before cutting the matching rails, uprights and door parts. Label front, rear and the four removable depth rails. Dry-fit connector hardware and drill the prescribed pilot holes with a depth stop. Remove splinters and ease accessible corners without rounding away important connector bearing surfaces.

Build the two ladder frames

Fit three 33-inch uprights between each pair of 48-inch rails. Position the center upright so its centerline is 24 inches from either outside end. Each front and rear opening then measures 21.75 × 33 inches. Square both frames and complete their joint sets and corner restraint before connecting them.

Join the frames at the corners

Install the four 21-inch depth rails between front and rear frames at the upper and lower corners. Use the eight removable connection sets. Check for a 48 × 24-inch footprint and equal diagonals before tightening. Ensure that later rail removal will remain possible without destroying a permanently glued liner.

Prepare the timber finish

Remove the depth rails and finish all timber faces, holes and vulnerable end grain using a coating confirmed for the chosen substrate and conditions. Follow its preparation and complete cure requirements. Finish the two plywood floor pieces separately, keeping mating surfaces compatible. Reassemble only after the specified curing conditions have been met.

Install the supported floor stack

Lay the first 0.75-inch plywood piece directly on the assessed base within the bottom frame. Place the matching deck on top, so its upper surface is 1.5 inches above the base. Both layers require continuous support. The PVC floor later adds its actual thickness; this arrangement does not create an independently load-rated raised platform.

Lay out the panel capture system

Locate fixed stops and removable beads within the timber depth so neither changes the stated outside frame size. Leave enough engagement to retain the panel throughout its permitted movement. Check corner conflicts using short sample pieces. Keep the bead screws accessible from the service side, with no exposed tips inside.

Cut and fit the rear and side liners

Cut the two separate rear panels and two side panels, deburr every edge and test their clearance. The rear center post stays between its panels, avoiding a hidden collision with a single full-width sheet. Adjust blank dimensions if the supplier requires more than the nominal 0.125-inch edge gap.

Fit the floor and corner covers

Place the floor liner on the supported deck with its movement gap. Install removable smooth corner covers over exposed junctions and timber where required by the animal-contact assessment. Keep covers secure without rigidly bonding all sheets together. Water belongs in separate approved containers; the panel joints are not intended to retain standing water.

Assemble and hang the doors

Join each pair of 32.75-inch stiles with three 18.5-inch rails. Fit the viewing or mesh infill using its own supplier's fixing instructions. Hang the resulting 21.5 × 32.75-inch doors in the 21.75 × 33-inch openings. Install three hinges and two positive latches per door, checking the nominal 0.125-inch reveals.

Install removable ventilation and roof

Fit a captured roof panel and protected high and low vent cassettes according to the environmental plan. A solid roof requires ventilation elsewhere; mesh area is not automatically suitable. Fit retained service pass-throughs and cover sharp edges. Support heating and lighting separately within their specified clearances from PVC and timber.

Rehearse a liner replacement

With the enclosure empty, remove a rear panel and one side panel, then reinstall them with their original movement gaps. Try removing the roof and floor sheet as well. Record which beads must come off first. Correct inaccessible screws or trapped sheets before adding furnishings that would make the problem harder to reach.

Commission through normal use cycles

Run the intended equipment without an animal through repeated day and night cycles. Measure retreats, exposed surfaces and warm and cool locations independently. Perform the planned damp cleaning routine and inspect behind a lower panel. Resolve persistent moisture, material movement, odor, escape gaps or unsafe fixture temperatures before use.

Final construction checks

  • Record the reduced usable interior and the floor's actual height above the base. Check that every panel remains retained at its expected temperature extremes.
  • Test both doors, four latches and every service opening. Confirm full manufacturer cure and accessible equipment isolation.
  • Document successful removal and refitting of the rear, side, roof and floor panels.

Before introducing an animal

  • Measured conditions meet the separate husbandry plan through repeated day and night cycles.
  • Use the exact animal’s care guide to select the heating, lighting and furnishings. Run the complete setup, record measurements at the places the animal will use and resolve any unmet requirements before move-in.

Review your preparation checklist

Maintain and inspect the enclosure

  • Inspect behind lower liners and beneath the floor stack after spills. Dry and investigate wet timber instead of concealing it with fresh sealant.
  • Replace worn gaskets, loose beads or damaged PVC with the documented materials. House the animal elsewhere during repairs or disassembly.

Limitations and decisions to resolve

  • No immersion, pressure washing, stacking, large water feature or quantified furniture load is included.
  • Humidity tolerance depends on the selected materials, ventilation and maintenance. This project dimension is not a species recommendation.
