Before you choose this build
The outside plywood carcass is 48 × 24 × 24 inches. Quarter-inch overlay doors increase depth to 24.25 inches, plus measured hinge and latch projections. The shell cavity is 47 × 23.5 × 23 inches before framing. This original, untested fabrication layout is for removable terrestrial furnishings and routine wiping, not water containment.
Before you start
- Dimensions assume actual 0.5-inch plywood and 1 × 1-inch cleats. Measure stock and recalculate joints if thickness differs.
- Cleats leave a central region 45 inches wide and 21 inches deep, with additional edge intrusion at floor and roof. Each door opening is 21.25 × 17.5 inches.
- Select the animal, fixtures, clearances, vent templates, acrylic hardware and support before cutting.
- Have a competent woodworker assess the actual materials and joints. No structural capacity is assigned to hanging furnishings, heavy rockwork or stacking.

Establish the drawing and hardware
Draw front and top views showing the fascia, cleats and door overlays. Place the actual vent templates and hinge samples on the drawing. Resolve screw, framing and equipment interference before cutting.

Check stock and cut the shell
Measure plywood thickness at several edges. Lay out the floor, roof, sides and back with saw kerfs between parts. Cut on a supported surface and label pieces. Compare paired panels and diagonals; correct inaccuracies before assembly.

Cut and arrange the cleats
Cut four vertical and eight horizontal cleats. Mark wall and cleat footprints on the floor. Front verticals sit behind the half-inch fascia allowance. Dry-fit the perimeter pieces between the verticals and verify the 21-inch side-cleat spaces.

Predrill the connections
Clamp a panel and cleat together, drill a clearance hole through the panel and a suitable pilot into the cleat, then test one screw on scrap. Its point must remain buried. Stagger screws entering the same corner from adjacent faces. Place fixings clear of cleat ends and reject splitting rather than covering it with coating.

Assemble the base, sides and back
Fasten the lower cleats and verticals to their panels, then assemble the shell on the floor panel. The back spans the full width behind the side ends. Use clamps to hold contact while driving screws. Check front-opening diagonals and the flatness of the floor before tightening the last connections.

Fit the roof and front fascia
Attach the upper cleats and roof. Install the two fascia stiles, top rail, substrate rail and centered stile, using rear blocking where the center joints need screw purchase. Measure both openings; each should be 21.25 × 17.5 inches. Check that the fascia lies in one plane so the overlay doors can close evenly.

Cut and test the ventilation panels
Transfer the selected vent templates to their planned locations, clear of cleats. Cut and smooth the openings, then test-fit the frames. Provide an accessible lower inlet and upper outlet arrangement from the ventilation plan, keeping the roof screen beneath externally mounted lighting. Remove the vent frames again for finishing.

Prepare the coating surfaces
Remove doors and hardware from the finishing area. Pond Armor specifies sound wood prepared with 60-grit texture. Remove dust thoroughly. Have the maker confirm the joint-reinforcement method for this plywood assembly; reinforce as directed. Coat a scrap sample first so the same wood, preparation and application method can be checked.

Apply the specified finish
Use Pond Shield's current instructions: measure two parts A to one part B, mix thoroughly and immediately transfer to a shallow tray. Do not leave the mixture heating in its cup. Apply the required 10-mil minimum coating and any additional coats specified for the surface, checking thickness with the supplied gauge.

Cure and inspect the interior
Keep the cabinet empty for at least the maker's 24-hour cure period, longer where conditions require. Check every joint, cut edge and screw recess for defects or tackiness. Correct failures using the product's recoat procedure and restart the applicable cure period. Record application conditions and completion; elapsed time alone does not prove a defective mix has cured.

Fabricate and hang the acrylic
Confirm the finished openings, then have the doors cut and drilled for the selected hinges. ACRYLITE requires expansion clearance in point-fastened holes and recommends grommets. Do not substitute tight wood-screw holes. Support each door while fitting through-fasteners, and adjust the hardware without clamping the acrylic so tightly that it cannot move.

Fit the closures and inspect gaps
Install upper and lower positive closures on each door. Close both leaves and check their half-inch overlays against the fascia, including the center stile. Inspect for flexing that opens a passage behind an apparently closed door. Select additional hardware or a different door specification if containment cannot be achieved for the intended animal.

Mount vents and external equipment
Reinstall the framed screens with all sharp mesh edges enclosed. Fit lighting using complete manufacturer-approved mounts and clearances, with hot fixtures outside animal reach. Do not suspend weight from an unverified plywood span. Route probes through fitted, closed-around-cable ports and keep plugs accessible outside the cabinet.

Furnish and commission the enclosure
Place the empty enclosure on its fully supported, capacity-verified base. Add removable furnishings and measuring probes, then run repeated day and night cycles without an animal. Check the climate, door movement and finish during warm operation. Rehearse cleaning and access; correct any binding, exposed edge, unstable furnishing or unmet environmental target before use.
Final construction checks
- Verify cut dimensions and finished clear space, including intruding cleats. Check doors both cold and after normal warm operation, and assess every gap for the intended animal.
- Finish and repaired areas satisfy the exact manufacturer's curing instructions, with no tacky patches, exposed wood or unresolved compatibility questions.
- The support capacity is documented, and fittings can be removed without disturbing heat equipment.
Before introducing an animal
- Independent readings meet the animal's selected care plan.
- Use the exact animal’s care guide to select the heating, lighting and furnishings. Run the complete setup, record measurements at the places the animal will use and resolve any unmet requirements before move-in.
Maintain and inspect the enclosure
- Inspect coating at corners, fasteners and dish locations during cleaning. Remove the animal to suitable temporary housing before any repair; repeat preparation, curing and empty trials afterward.
- Check acrylic for cracks around holes, latch loosening and changes in door fit. Use cleaners compatible with the acrylic and cured coating.
- Keep vent mesh open and inspect the support and cleated joints after relocation or a substantial change in contents.
Limitations and decisions to resolve
- The cut geometry is checked arithmetically; this assembly has not been physically built or structurally tested.
- Pond Shield's published compatibility and cure information concerns its coating; it is not manufacturer approval of this enclosure or a certification for every reptile use.
- Heavy climbing structures, water containment, a stand, stacking and load-bearing shelves are outside this plan. Door and vent hardware require actual supplier specifications.
