Before you choose this build
The plywood carcass measures 24 × 24 × 36 inches outside. Its quarter-inch overlay door increases depth to 24.25 inches before hardware. The shell cavity is 23 × 23.5 × 35 inches before framing. Select elevated furnishings, ventilation and equipment before fabrication.
Before you start
- Use actual 0.5-inch plywood and 1 × 1-inch cleats; recalculate for different stock. Corner cleats leave a central space 21 inches wide and deep, with further edge intrusion at floor and roof.
- The 20 × 29.5-inch opening receives a planned 21 × 30.5-inch acrylic door with half-inch overlays. A fabricator must confirm thickness, hinges and allowances.
- Use a capacity-verified support and suitable anti-tip restraint. This plan does not design a stand.
- Choose a removable, floor-supported climbing assembly with appropriate documented capacity. Do not assume the cabinet supports suspended loads.

Draw the occupied space
Draw the floor, fascia, cleats and climbing assembly to scale. Add the highest position, lamp clearances and hand-access route. If these cannot coexist within the clear space, change the project before fabrication.

Plan a stable installation
Confirm the support's capacity for the complete installation and obtain an appropriate restraint kit. Locate its attachment points using the actual wall and support construction. Arrange the cabinet so an opened door will not obstruct a walkway or invite someone to pull on it for balance. Keep the electrical disconnection point reachable.

Cut and verify the shell panels
Measure stock thickness and lay out the cut list with kerf allowance. Cut and label the panels. Compare diagonals and paired lengths. Correct errors now, since a tall door makes carcass twist particularly apparent.

Prepare the cleated joints
Cut the verticals and horizontal cleats, then dry-fit them inside the panel outlines. The front verticals start half an inch behind the face. Test screw length and pilot size on scrap. Stagger adjacent-face fasteners so their points cannot collide inside a one-inch cleat, and keep all points buried.

Assemble the lower body
Fasten the floor cleats, sides, back and vertical cleats using clamps to hold each joint in contact. The back closes behind the side-panel ends. Check that the floor remains flat and the open front remains square. A joint should be supported by its cleat, rather than held only by screws driven into a plywood edge.

Add the roof and door frame
Install the upper cleats and roof, then the two front stiles and rails. Measure the finished 20 × 29.5-inch opening and compare its diagonals. Run a straightedge across the face to check that it is planar. Record the actual measurement for the acrylic order instead of ordering solely from the nominal cabinet height.

Prepare service openings
Use the selected manufacturers' templates to mark the lower and upper vents, roof screen and closed-around-cable ports. Keep each clear of framing and the door hardware. Cut, smooth and test-fit the components. Make sure vent screws can be reached later without dismantling the climbing arrangement or removing a wall.

Prepare and coat the wood
Use Pond Shield on sound wood prepared to the maker's 60-grit texture, with its specified joint reinforcement. Mix accurately at two parts A to one part B, move the mixture promptly into a shallow tray and apply the specified minimum 10-mil coating. Follow the exact product instructions for additional coats and recoat timing.

Complete curing and inspection
Allow at least the manufacturer's 24-hour cure, extending it for the application conditions. Inspect the ceiling, vent cut edges and fastener recesses as carefully as the floor. Correct bare, thin or tacky areas using the manufacturer's procedure. Repaired areas must complete their own required cure before hardware and furnishings return.

Fit the acrylic door
Have the leaf fabricated for the selected continuous hinge. ACRYLITE's point-fastening guidance requires allowance for expansion and suitable hole edge distances; its drilling guidance calls for secure backing and controlled drilling. Use the specified through-fasteners and grommets. Support the door during fitting and inspect for stress around every hole.

Add and check the closures
Fit a positive latch near the top and another near the bottom, using appropriate blocking behind the frame where required. Close the door gently and inspect its entire overlay. Check whether the long free edge can flex enough to expose a gap. If so, change the door or hardware specification before proceeding.

Secure the cabinet and equipment
Set the empty cabinet on its final support and install its anti-tip restraint as instructed. Refit the framed vents and mount complete external lighting equipment using approved supports. Do not hang loads from the unverified roof. Check clearances against the highest position the animal could reach, including the tops of furnishings.

Install the removable climbing arrangement
Place the selected floor-supported assembly on its intended base and secure its components using their specified method. Verify that it does not rely on glass, screen or a thin panel to stay upright. Rehearse removing it through the front opening. Keep drinking and retreat fittings reachable without undoing the main climbing structure.

Check access at every level
Inspect branch junctions, attachment ends and spaces behind foliage for trapping or sharp edges. Reach the highest and lowest cleaning points while the enclosure is empty. Confirm that opening the door cannot catch a branch or pull a pot over. Use only the planned capacity-rated furnishings; a push test does not create a load rating.

Commission without an animal
Run repeated daytime and nighttime cycles with the final furnishings installed. Measure at multiple occupied heights and at a contrasting retreat, recording probe positions and equipment settings. Recheck door fit when warm. Correct unmet conditions, unstable fittings or inaccessible service points, then repeat the affected checks before introducing the animal.
Final construction checks
- The finished clear space and door opening match the drawing; the support and restraint are appropriate to the actual installation.
- Every part of the door remains overlapped and securely closed during normal warm operation. Vents, cable ports and the climbing assembly have no unresolved containment or trapping gaps.
- The coating is cured and intact.
Before introducing an animal
- Independent measurements at occupied heights meet the selected animal's care plan.
- Use the exact animal’s care guide to select the heating, lighting and furnishings. Run the complete setup, record measurements at the places the animal will use and resolve any unmet requirements before move-in.
Maintain and inspect the enclosure
- Inspect the long acrylic edge, hinge fasteners and upper latch regularly. Replace a cracked panel; do not try to stop a spreading crack by tightening its hinge.
- Remove climbing fittings for thorough inspection and cleaning as needed. Recheck any attachment disturbed during maintenance.
- Watch coated cut edges, roof penetrations and floor corners for moisture damage. Repairs require empty temporary housing, product-specific curing and renewed commissioning.
Limitations and decisions to resolve
- The untested cabinet has no assigned capacity for hanging plants, large branches, stacking or a person leaning on it.
- Pond Shield sources support coating procedures, not species suitability or endorsement of this enclosure.
- Door hardware, vent sizing and the climbing assembly remain dependent on the actual selected products. A nominal tall enclosure is not automatically suitable for every climbing reptile.
