Before you choose this build

The finished plywood box is 72 × 36 × 36 inches outside, excluding latches and handles. It uses actual half-inch panels around a 71 × 35 × 35-inch internal frame. The bottom and top panels add the remaining inch of height. Dimensions are an original construction choice, not an adult species recommendation.

Before you start

  • Choose and document the exact coating and seam system before purchasing finishing supplies. The finishing stages below depend on its full instructions and do not specify a universal coating recipe or cure time.
  • Specify the animal, intended substrate depth and furnishings before cutting. This design does not rate the walls for deep packed soil, burrowing pressure or heavy rockwork.
  • Measure every sheet: the listed cuts assume a true 0.5-inch thickness and timber that is 1.5 inches square. Recalculate outer-skin allowances if either differs.
  • The entire bottom must rest on a level, continuous, independently assessed support. Do not put this wide enclosure on four improvised corner legs.
  • The front panels lift away rather than swing. Arrange secure temporary animal housing for full removal and keep enough space in front to lift a panel with two hands.

Lay out the completed internal use

Draw the substrate, retreats, water container and service route inside the frame dimensions. Keep furnishings clear of the removable front panels and allow access to the far rear corners. Select the animal’s environmental plan before locating vents. This wide footprint is useful only if the actual furnishing layout leaves appropriate movement and retreat space.

Prepare a continuously supported base

Have the intended support assessed for the complete enclosure, substrate and furnishing load. It must support the whole plywood bottom without concentrated corner loading. Verify level and reserve access around cables and service equipment. Do not build the shell first and then assume a convenient cabinet, workbench or household floor will carry it safely.

Cut and check the skins

Cut the bottom, top, rear and sides to the listed sizes, preserving square edges. Dry-arrange them around the base to confirm the joint order: rear across the full width, sides between front and rear, and top and bottom outside all vertical skins. Label every inside face and mark the frame inset half an inch from the base perimeter.

Assemble the inner frame

Build two 71 x 35-inch rings using 32-inch end rails between long rails. Fit six 32-inch uprights, including front and rear center posts. Clamp square with temporary braces, then secure the butt joints using suitable plates and specified fasteners. These cuts do not include joint-housing allowances.

Fit the bottom and fixed skins

Attach the frame to the bottom skin while the base is flat, then install the rear and sides. Predrill screws through the plywood into sound framing, leaving no point exposed inside. The skins should contact their supports without being pulled across gaps by screws. Leave the top removable until coating, retainer installation and cable planning are complete.

Make the removable front panels

Cut two 35.75-by-34.75-inch panels and mark their viewing openings. Keep each window centred left to right with its bottom nine inches above the panel bottom. Drill starter holes within the waste and cut smooth rounded corners. Sand the cut edges carefully, because every exposed plywood layer will need complete coating coverage.

Prepare mechanical glazing retention

Obtain glazing from a supplier who has checked material, thickness and support for this use. Use the listed one-inch overlap around the viewing cutout, with compatible gaskets and removable retaining beads. Do not screw directly through glass or force plastic between fixed edges. The glazing is a viewing infill, not a structural brace for the front panel.

Fit the separate substrate retainer

Measure the two 33.25-inch spaces between the inner faces of corner and centre front posts. Fit the eight-inch-high retainer pieces there with smooth sealed edges and accessible screws. Keep the chosen substrate below the retainer’s safe working level. These pieces prevent loose material spilling when a front is removed; they do not authorize deep, compacted soil loads.

Install locating pins and latches

Fit two locating pins beneath each removable front so it returns to the same position without sliding sideways. Add four compression latches per panel, distributed to close the edges evenly against a continuous stop and gasket. Fit two handles to each front. Check that the centre reveal cannot be pried open or become a trapping gap.

Cut supported ventilation openings

Mark vent positions from the animal’s heat and humidity plan, keeping cuts clear of uprights, ring rails and panel joints. Begin with removable cassettes rather than permanently drilling an arbitrary field of holes. Round cutout corners, seal their edges and screen every opening. Maintain access to the screens so dust and substrate can be removed later.

Apply the complete wood-protection system

Record the exact coating system and its approved plywood, seam reinforcement and repair methods before finishing. Remove glazing and hardware. Prepare every plywood face, cut edge, recess and penetration using that system’s instructions. If selecting Pond Shield, use the linked full manufacturer instructions for wood preparation, joints, batch handling and film-thickness verification; another finish may require a different method. Record the product, batch and application conditions.

Cure, inspect and reassemble

Keep the enclosure empty until the selected system completes its documented service cure under the actual application conditions. Inspect corners, joints, cut edges and penetrations for missed, thin, tacky or defective areas. Repair using the same system’s approved method and complete the repair cure before reinstalling glazing, hardware and the removable top. Record the inspection and any repairs before continuing.

Install furnishings and equipment

Place heavy furnishings only where the support assessment permits them, with stable bases that cannot shift when substrate is disturbed. Mount guards and cable entries to framing rather than thin skins. Keep fixtures at their manufacturer’s clearances and route probes securely. Use listed plug-in equipment with appropriate protected outlets; do not fabricate mains wiring inside the enclosure.

Rehearse front-panel servicing

With no animal present, unlatch and lift one panel using both handles, then remove the largest furnishing through the opening. Confirm the second front remains fully secured. Clean the retainer edge and replace the panel on its locating pins without pinching the gasket. Arrange a protected storage position where removed glazing cannot be knocked over.

Run and inspect the complete enclosure

Operate the furnished shell empty through repeated day and night cycles and the intended cleaning routine. Measure warm and cool locations, retreats and substrate surfaces with independent instruments. Look behind accessible joints for moisture and check the front reveals after temperature changes. Correct the design if it cannot maintain the separate care requirements without unsafe equipment placement.

Final construction checks

  • Verify the 72 × 36 × 36-inch external box and usable interior. Check eight latches and both substrate retainers.
  • Test coated areas with the intended damp cleaning method after full cure; do not flood the shell to prove waterproofing.
  • Confirm every animal-contact surface is smooth and fixtures remain within their installation limits.

Before introducing an animal

  • Measured gradients meet the species plan.
  • Use the exact animal’s care guide to select the heating, lighting and furnishings. Run the complete setup, record measurements at the places the animal will use and resolve any unmet requirements before move-in.

Review your preparation checklist

Maintain and inspect the enclosure

  • Inspect removable-panel gaskets, locating pins and coating around the substrate retainers. Replace damaged finishes with the animal housed elsewhere.
  • Remove vent cassettes for cleaning and inspect the supported bottom periodically. Any swelling, joint opening or change in support level requires investigation.

Limitations and decisions to resolve

  • This is not a deep-substrate retaining box, aquarium, stackable cabinet or structure rated for heavy stone backgrounds.
  • Removable fronts need controlled servicing and secure temporary housing; this design does not provide a separately isolated animal compartment.
