Before you choose this build
Two modules form a 72 × 36 × 18-inch wooden body including caps, before compressed liner thickness beneath them. Measure final height after lining. Joining plates increase depth to 36.25 inches, plus measured nut projection. The shell interior is 71 × 35 inches before cleats, with a 33-inch central floor width. Empty the table before separating modules.
Before you start
- Use actual 0.5-inch plywood and 1 × 1-inch cleats. Central ends have no wall, threshold or crossbar. Recalculate for different stock.
- Seventeen-inch walls fit between half-inch floor and caps. Floor-to-rim height is 17.5 inches before substrate; the opening is 69 × 33 inches. Framing and folds intrude at edges.
- The entire floor needs continuous, level, capacity-verified support. Plates align modules; they do not bridge separate stands.
- Confirm animal requirements and open-top containment. These dimensions are not a species minimum.

Plan the assembled and transport routes
Mark the footprint, joining hardware and lamp supports. Measure doorways to confirm each empty 36-inch module can pass through the relocation route. Verify a continuous supporting platform before planning furniture beneath the table.

Make mirrored module drawings
Draw mirrored modules with their closed ends facing outward and both central ends open. Mark the joining plates on the eventual seam. Confirm there is no unintended double wall or crossbar through the middle.

Cut and check the panels
Measure stock thickness and lay out floors, walls and caps with kerf allowance. Cut and label matching pairs. Compare floor diagonals and side-wall heights. Keep the central floor edges straight and undamaged because the continuous liner covers that joint.

Prepare the cleats and pilots
Cut the eight verticals and twelve horizontal pieces. At an outer end, allow for the half-inch wall before the corner cleat; at an open end, the cleat finishes flush with the module end. Dry-fit the 33.5-inch horizontal pieces between them. Test screw length and stagger adjacent-face fixings on scrap.

Assemble the first module
Fasten two long walls and one outer end wall to their cleats and floor. Add the upper cleats, keeping the central end open. Clamp joints in contact while driving screws, then compare diagonals and inspect the floor for twist. Do not install any crosspiece across the central walking opening.

Build and align the second module
Assemble the mirrored module and place both on the final supporting platform. Bring the central floor and side-wall edges together. Run a straightedge over the floor seam and along the front wall. Correct a height difference or twist at the support or fabrication stage; the joining plates must not be used to pull a badly mismatched floor flat.

Fit the exterior joining plates
Center each 12-inch plate on the side-wall seam, with its bottom two inches above the floor's underside. Transfer the fabricator's four-hole pattern through the wall. Fit the eight through-bolt sets with smooth heads inside and secure nuts outside. Check thread engagement and protect exposed ends. The plates retain alignment while the continuous platform carries the loaded floor.

Fit and label the removable caps
Lay the four long cap sections over their upper cleats, meeting at the center seam, then fit the two outer-end caps between them. Predrill fixings into backing timber. Check the 69 × 33-inch top opening and remove the caps for lining. Label each section so the same holes can be used when the table is reassembled.

Prepare the interior for the membrane
Smooth panel edges, plate-bolt heads and any place the liner will touch. Vacuum out shavings and inspect the floor seam under a flashlight. Lay the compatible underlayment across both modules and up the walls, cushioning the flush center joint. Do not use padding to conceal a protruding point or a floor that can move vertically.

Fit one continuous liner
Center the unseamed EPDM sheet over the assembled table. Settle it onto the floor and around the lower cleats without stretching it over gaps. Fold the corners and turn excess over the rim. Keep the central floor seam beneath an intact section of membrane. There is no glued joint between modules to fabricate or cure.

Refit caps and check the barrier
Retain the liner beneath the prepared caps, with fixings at the rim above the planned substrate and moisture zone. Trim outside surplus only after all folds are relaxed. Use a small controlled amount of water at the lowest area, remove it and inspect for leaks. Do not fill the table as a pond or create an unverified test load.

Install contents and equipment
Add the selected substrate in measured portions and place stable, nonpuncturing furnishings. Include their wet weight in the support record. Mount complete lighting and heating equipment using approved secure supports and clearances. Keep the rim and liner out of contact with hot fixtures, and leave access to the joining plates for future empty disassembly.

Check containment and the environment
Measure effective wall height from every reachable substrate mound and furnishing. Confirm that the open-top arrangement suits the animal and room. Run repeated light and dark cycles without an animal, measuring occupied warm and contrasting locations. Adjust the layout or choose different housing if the required conditions and containment cannot coexist.

Rehearse maintenance and document disassembly
Rehearse corner access, dish removal and cleaning behind the retreat. Record the accepted measurements and hardware positions. For relocation, move the animal to suitable housing, disconnect equipment, remove all contents, lift caps and liner, undo the joining plates and move the empty modules separately. Never separate or lift them while filled.
Final construction checks
- The floor seam is flush and both modules are continuously supported. Actual installation load is compatible with the documented platform capacity.
- The membrane has no seam at the module joint, loose accessible edge or unresolved puncture hazard. Plate bolts are secure and protected.
Before introducing an animal
- Usable dimensions, effective wall height and measured environmental conditions are appropriate to the intended animal; open-top risks in the actual room are resolved.
- Use the exact animal’s care guide to select the heating, lighting and furnishings. Run the complete setup, record measurements at the places the animal will use and resolve any unmet requirements before move-in.
Maintain and inspect the enclosure
- Inspect the central seam area for movement and the liner around furnishings for wear during cleaning. A changed seam or loosening joint requires unloading and correction.
- Keep the outside wood and joining hardware dry. Retain labeled caps and the measured bolt specification for future reassembly.
- After relocation, inspect the reused liner for damage or replace it, then repeat support, barrier, containment and empty environmental checks.
Limitations and decisions to resolve
- The cut geometry is internally checked, but this original design has not been physically built or structurally tested. No load rating is assigned to the box, joining plates or a proposed stand.
- Nominal body dimensions exclude the explicitly described plate and fastener projections. Measure the full hardware envelope before placing it between walls or furniture.
- The open table has no protective lid and no universal species suitability. No adhesive or finish is added; a later coating or liner repair must follow that exact product's instructions.
