Before you choose this build

The wooden body measures 48 × 24 × 12 inches including half-inch caps, before compressed liner thickness beneath them. Measure final height after lining. The shell floor is 47 × 23 inches; cleats leave a 45 × 21-inch central flat area and top opening. Floor-to-rim height is 11.5 inches before substrate and liner allowance. This original project establishes neither a tortoise minimum nor escape-proof wall dimensions.

Before you start

  • All cuts assume actual 0.5-inch plywood and actual 1 × 1-inch cleats. Measure the stock first. The table has no legs and requires a level, fully supporting platform with documented capacity for its complete contents.
  • Confirm that an open table can meet the intended tortoise's space, humidity, heating, lighting and containment requirements in the chosen room. Substrate and furniture reduce effective wall height.
  • The moisture barrier is one mechanically retained sheet of Aquascape 45-mil EPDM pond liner over compatible underlayment. It is not a glued liner. The maker describes water-containment use; that does not establish resistance to every animal's claws or biting.
  • Keep the liner protected from damage and its edges inaccessible beneath caps. If that cannot be achieved for the intended animal, use a suitable rigid-lined enclosure instead of assuming that a flexible membrane will withstand it.

Check the intended installation

Mark the table footprint and the lamp-support footprint in the room. Confirm that you can reach the entire floor for cleaning without leaning on the walls. Verify the platform's capacity using the actual planned wet substrate and furnishings. This plan does not provide a stand or justify placing the box across unsupported furniture gaps.

Draw the floor arrangement

Sketch the retreat, dish and occupied warm and cool areas at full scale. Mark substrate depth and the remaining effective wall height beside every furnishing. Compare the arrangement with the animal's requirements. If a retreat or mound provides a route over the rim, redesign the layout or choose different housing before construction.

Cut and label the plywood

Check thickness and lay out the floor, walls and caps with space for the saw kerf. Cut on a supported surface. Label the long walls and the shorter end walls, then compare their heights directly. The walls are 11 inches high because floor and top caps together add the remaining inch.

Prepare the framing

Cut the vertical and horizontal cleats. Dry-fit them inside the wall outline, with horizontal pieces between the corner verticals. Test screw length and pilot size on scrap. The screw point must remain inside the backing timber. Stagger fasteners entering a corner from different directions so they cannot meet inside the cleat.

Assemble the walls on the floor

Clamp the long walls to the floor, fit the end walls between them and fasten the cleated joints. Keep panel edges in contact rather than using a screw to close a large gap. Compare the outside diagonals and check the base for twist. Correct alignment while all connections remain easy to reach.

Add the upper cleats and test caps

Fit the upper horizontal cleats beneath the future caps. Lay the long caps along the outside edges and the end caps between them. Check the 45 × 21-inch top opening. Predrill cap fixings into their timber backing, then remove the caps and label their positions for refitting over the liner.

Smooth the interior

Remove splinters, sharp plywood corners and protruding fastener heads wherever the liner will touch. Run a cloth over the interior to find snagging points. Vacuum away debris, then inspect the floor and lower cleats again under a flashlight. A soft underlay cannot reliably conceal an exposed screw point.

Fit the protective underlayment

Place the compatible underlayment over the floor and up all walls. Fold it around the cleats and corners without leaving hard bunches beneath the liner. Keep the top area clear enough for the caps to seat. This layer protects the membrane from the woodwork; it does not replace careful surface preparation.

Fit the uncut liner

Center the EPDM sheet, settle it into the floor and fold surplus at the corners instead of cutting corner seams. Allow it to follow the lower cleats without stretching across a hollow. Turn the excess over the rim. Check that material remains available on every outside edge before making any trim.

Retain the liner mechanically

Refit the labeled caps with the liner beneath them, using the prepared fixings. Place penetrations at the rim, above the intended substrate and moisture zone. Confirm that caps sit securely without a sharp pinch edge. Trim only the outside surplus, leaving no accessible loose flap inside the table. No adhesive or coating is added.

Check the barrier and dimensions

With the table empty on its final support, use a small controlled amount of water to check the liner's lowest area, then remove it and inspect beneath the table. Do not fill the table as a pond or create an unverified load. Measure the final clear space and record any intrusion from folds and caps.

Install the removable contents

Add the selected substrate in measured portions, watching the liner and support. Place the retreat and dish on stable, nonpuncturing contact surfaces appropriate to their weight. Keep both removable without lifting the caps. Recheck effective wall height from the highest substrate or furnishing an animal could reach.

Mount and commission the equipment

Use complete listed lighting and heating equipment on secure supports selected for this open table. Maintain the fixture manufacturer's clearances from the animal, wood and membrane. Place independent probes at occupied locations and run repeated light and dark cycles without the animal. Record conditions and revise the arrangement if requirements cannot be met.

Rehearse ongoing care

Practice dish removal, spot cleaning and access behind the retreat. Check that the equipment remains secure as you work. Inspect the rim and liner again, then record the accepted layout and readings. Introduce an animal only after space, climate, containment and material-protection checks pass for that individual.

Final construction checks

  • The box is square and fully supported. Its actual loaded weight is compatible with the documented platform capacity.
  • Liner folds are supported, edges retained and inaccessible, and no points or damaged surfaces threaten the membrane.

Before introducing an animal

  • The remaining wall height and open-top arrangement are appropriate for the intended animal and room. Independent environmental readings meet its selected care plan.
  • Use the exact animal’s care guide to select the heating, lighting and furnishings. Run the complete setup, record measurements at the places the animal will use and resolve any unmet requirements before move-in.

Review your preparation checklist

Maintain and inspect the enclosure

  • Inspect the liner around the dish, retreat and corners during cleaning. Remove damaged sharp furnishings rather than covering their contact points with loose material.
  • Keep exterior wood dry and inspect cap screws and joints. The unfinished woodwork has no protective finish that should be assumed to tolerate soaking.
  • A liner replacement requires emptying the table, removing caps and repeating the barrier, access and environmental checks.

Limitations and decisions to resolve

  • This design has not been physically built or structurally tested. It does not include a stand, protective lid, outdoor weatherproofing or a universal tortoise wall height.
  • There is no finish or adhesive cure in this version. Adding paint, seam tape or sealant creates a different material system with its own exact instructions.
  • Pond-liner sources establish material identity and water-containment use, not a veterinary endorsement or animal damage rating.
