Catalog tank dimensions do not establish flange clearance or operating water depth. Obtain the current outer flange dimensions, support requirements and approved working fill before purchase. The example guard is 56 × 44 × 48 inches outside; enlarge it if the delivered flange does not clear it.
Before you start
- Use a manufactured water-holding basin with documented installation requirements. This project excludes tank fabrication, resealing and homemade stands.
- Have the complete installation assessed for floor capacity, including water, tank, platform, furnishings and people servicing it. One US gallon of water weighs approximately 8.34 pounds; a shallow fill can still impose a substantial concentrated load.
- Procure a removable dry platform and ramp with a documented capacity for the individual turtle and an attachment method approved by the basin supplier. A suitable platform kit has not been verified for this exact tank; resolve this purchase prerequisite before construction.
- The guard cut list uses actual 1.5-inch-square timber. Its clear floor opening is 53 × 41 inches. The guard must not touch or brace the basin, interfere with tank expansion, or conceal a leak.
Select a compatible dry platform and ramp with documented capacity, support, access and removal method. Obtain vessel support and working-fill instructions before the dependent installation steps.

Check the delivery and retrieval route
Measure the delivery route before ordering. Plan later removal without demolishing the guard or trapping pipework. Confirm safe access to every wet surface and the animal. A 36-inch-deep basin may require a different servicing arrangement from a shallow tub.

Approve the floor and tank support
List the expected operating water volume and all additional weights for the person assessing the floor. Use the manufacturer’s support detail exactly, including any requirement for continuous bearing or a specified base. Do not improvise blocks, pallet corners or a timber shelf. Place and inspect the empty basin
Move the empty basin by the manufacturer's handling method. Inspect gelcoat, corners, flange and fittings for damage, then clean, level and support it as directed. Preserve drain access. Obtain supplier approval before drilling or repairing the vessel.

Lay out the floorless guard
Mark a 56-by-44-inch rectangle around the actual vessel. The 53-by-41-inch clear frame opening must leave the required clearance on every side, including the flange and drain. If it does not, change the guard dimensions and recalculate the end rails and doors before cutting. Allow a separate route for hoses and enough space to remove the filter.

Build the guard rings and uprights
Make upper and lower rectangles from the 56-inch rails with the 41-inch rails between them. Fit the six 45-inch uprights between the rings and brace the corners with suitable plates. Keep the front midpoint accurate because it sets both door openings. Check the 48-inch height and equal diagonals without using the basin as a squaring jig.

Prepare the frame for splashes
Sand timber and coat it with an exterior or wet-service finish explicitly compatible with the wood and intended exposure. Follow the manufacturer’s full cure conditions before placing the frame around the basin. Keep the finish out of water-contact areas unless it is approved for that use. Leave lower joints visible enough that moisture damage can be detected.

Make the two service doors
Assemble two 25.5-by-44.75-inch door frames, each with a middle rail. Fit three hinges per door and separate secure latches near the top and bottom. The eighth-inch reveals are working clearances that still require animal-appropriate stops or gaskets. Check the corners under gentle pressure so a flexible door cannot create a wider escape opening.

Install captured infill and the top
Template each opening and mechanically capture its infill with smooth edge clamps. Provide the manufacturer’s expansion clearance for rigid plastic rather than tightening it hard against timber. Make the top removable in a way that requires deliberate unlatching. Mount lighting on a separately rated stand and preserve fixture clearances; mesh and plastic are not lamp supports by default.

Fit the approved dry-access system
Install the purchased platform and ramp exactly as its maker specifies, with the basin supplier’s approval for any contact or attachment. Confirm the platform remains dry at the highest operating level and cannot rotate, float, collapse or wedge the animal underneath. Leave it removable for cleaning. Do not transfer an unverified platform load onto the tank flange.

Arrange accessible filtration
Choose equipment whose permitted installation height suits the basin’s actual waterline. Mount hoses without pinches and guard the intake against entrapment. Place service valves and connections outside the animal’s reach where drips can be seen. Do not raise a heavy tank merely to accommodate an unsuitable canister filter; select a compatible system instead.

Complete electrical provision safely
Have suitable protected outlets and any building wiring provided by a qualified electrician. Use intact listed appliances and their supplied cords, with drip loops and separation from splashes as instructed. Keep plugs accessible without reaching over water. Do not splice cables, modify a heater or feed bare wiring through the enclosure frame.

Fill in measured stages
With the system empty of animals, add water in controlled stages and record the volume added. Inspect the tank, support and drain after each stage. Stop for movement, distortion or leaks. Establish a marked working waterline below the manufacturer’s limit, allowing for displacement by furnishings and the animal rather than filling to the rim.

Test shutdown and cleaning behaviour
Operate the complete filter and then disconnect power using the normal safe control. Observe siphoning, drain-back and any water movement at the dry platform. Restart according to the equipment manual. Practise removing the platform and servicing the filter without leaning on the basin. Correct hose routes or equipment choices before proceeding to biological commissioning.

Commission the habitat without a turtle
Run heating, lighting and filtration through complete daily cycles. Verify water temperature, dry-platform temperature and species-appropriate light exposure with suitable independent instruments. Establish biological filtration and acceptable water chemistry using a separate aquatic-care plan. A clear-looking basin and a running pump do not demonstrate that the enclosure is ready for occupancy.
Final construction checks
- Retain supplier approval for vessel support, the platform and any fitted penetrations. Record operating volume and the total load used in the floor assessment.
- Confirm complete drainage access, protected intakes, dry service connections, secure doors and a dry platform accessible at all planned water levels.
- Complete leak and power-loss checks. Follow the selected finish's documented cure requirements; odor alone does not establish coating cure.
Before introducing an animal
- Do not introduce an animal until temperature, light exposure and water-quality checks meet the separate aquatic-care plan.
- Use the exact animal’s care guide to select the heating, lighting and furnishings. Run the complete setup, record measurements at the places the animal will use and resolve any unmet requirements before move-in.
Maintain and inspect the enclosure
- Inspect the platform fixings, ramp surface and under-platform spaces during each water-service session. Remove debris without scratching the gelcoat.
- Follow the tank and filter manufacturers’ cleaning instructions, check visible connections for leaks and keep an appropriately sized temporary holding enclosure available.
Limitations and decisions to resolve
- The example guard is not a tank stand, retaining structure or load-rated handrail. No person may stand or sit on it.
- The catalog basin is verified, but actual flange size, support instructions and a suitable rated platform remain procurement prerequisites. This plan does not endorse the vessel for every turtle species.
