Before you choose this build

The dimensions describe the measured existing room before lining. Finished usable space will be smaller. This project installs non-load-bearing interior finishes only; structural work, electrical installation, HVAC changes, drainage, fire protection and door alterations requiring approval belong to qualified professionals.

Before you start

  • Start with a dedicated, dry, sound room whose floor capacity, moisture behavior and access have been assessed for the intended use. Do not conceal dampness, damaged plaster, suspected mold or an unresolved building defect.
  • Retain the existing approved doorway and required building services. A room used as an enclosure still needs safe human access, ventilation and an inside door release.
  • The reference build uses actual 0.75-inch furring and 0.5-inch plywood substrate. Let t be the selected FRP thickness and a its cured adhesive thickness. Each completed wall adds nominally 1.25 + t + a inches before local leveling or trim projections.
Resolve before the dependent work

The actual compatible panel, adhesive, trim and seam system must be selected before purchase; final usable room size is not yet measured.

Standard vertical furring

83.5-inch height is usable only if the chosen system allows 0.25-inch clearances at floor and ceiling. Increase clearance and reduce panels wherever its current instructions require.

Survey the existing room

Measure width, depth and height at several positions and draw the door, vents, outlets, pipework and access covers. Photograph existing defects. Confirm that 96 × 72 × 84 inches describes the unfinished area, not promised animal space after lining. Have uncertain floor support, moisture or building conditions resolved before fabrication.

Separate professional work from lining

Arrange any required building, electrical, ventilation or doorway work first through qualified professionals. Do not enclose electrical equipment that needs ventilation or access. Keep required exits and fire protection effective. Establish permitted attachment points and hidden-service locations rather than choosing anchor lengths by guesswork.

Select the complete finish system

Choose the exact FRP product, substrate, adhesive, trims and seam treatment together. Confirm interior-finish requirements and suitability for the expected temperature, cleaning and animal contact. An easy-clean wall claim is not proof against chewing or sustained immersion. Obtain current instructions and safety data before ordering. Record the exact panel, plywood surface/treatment, adhesive, trim and seam system as one compatible installation. Match the adhesive to the actual substrate using the selected manufacturer’s instructions; do not substitute Fast Grab for treated/fire-rated plywood or nonporous surfaces. Resolve the actual room’s finish and exposure requirements before purchase.

Map panel seams and inspections

Draw seams where continuous backing can be installed. Plan two lower inspection panels that expose the lining cavity without dismantling equipment. Keep these accessible after furnishings are installed. Check that the chosen trim system can be removed at those locations; permanently bonded seams across an inspection hatch defeat its purpose.

Install non-load-bearing furring

Fit vertical strips with nominal 0.75-inch clearances above the floor and below the ceiling. On the rear wall, place edge strips flush to the ends and intermediate backing centered at 16, 32, 48, 64 and 80 inches. Add side and doorway strips to support the actual panel edges, following the approved attachment schedule.

Check backing and plane

Use a straightedge to check the furring faces. Correct uneven backing by an approved method before adding sheet, without compromising anchors. Place extra blocking at seams, inspection-panel edges and permitted light equipment mounts. Heavy furnishings require their own assessed support and must not hang from FRP or unsupported plywood.

Fit the rear substrate

Dry-fit the two rear plywood pieces with their stated clearances. Fasten to the scheduled backing without pulling panels into a hollow or leaving exposed points. Preserve the selected adhesive's required substrate condition. Do not add an unrelated waterproof coating beneath an adhesive unless that combination is explicitly accepted.

Measure the side runs

Install the front substrate returns around the existing doorway, then measure each side's available run S between the intended finished front and rear surfaces. Apply the cut-list formula separately to each wall. Dry-fit both side pieces with the defined joints. Out-of-square rooms require scribing, not force that removes expansion space.

Template the FRP and trim

Lay out each wall with the actual trim profiles. Measure between their control surfaces and deduct the expansion allowances in the selected manufacturer's current instructions. Cut and label the panels before adhesive application. The listed rough blanks are a purchasing layout, not permission to disregard profile-specific allowances.

Install the wall finish

Prepare the substrate and apply the specified adhesive using its prescribed tool and coverage. Place and roll panels as directed while maintaining movement gaps. Use the matching seam and perimeter treatment for the anticipated moisture exposure. Keep inspection covers separate and follow the product's environmental and cure requirements before cleaning or closing the room.

Complete the doorway details

Fit smooth protective returns without obstructing hinges, releases or required door operation. Install retained seals that cannot be pulled into the enclosure. Check the threshold and perimeter against the animal's assessed escape capability. Test positive closure and release from inside with a helper outside and no animal present.

Fit a removable wear floor

Measure final W and D, cut the two floor pieces using the stated formula and leave their movement spaces. Protect exposed joints with removable smooth covers where needed. Keep the floor inspectable and avoid adhesive that defeats removal. This detail is for damp cleaning; do not flood it or build a soil bank against the wall lining.

Return protected services to use

Fit approved vent guards and cable protection without reducing required building ventilation or equipment clearances. Mount accessible controls outside the animal area where practical. Have qualified personnel complete any fixed electrical work. Keep service covers, shutoffs and the door reachable after installing independently supported furniture.

Commission the room empty

After all products have completed their specified cure, run the intended equipment through repeated environmental cycles. Measure several heights and retreats, and inspect the lining cavities after a cleaning trial. Rehearse emergency exit and equipment shutdown. Resolve condensation, odors, inaccessible services or door interference before a separate husbandry review permits occupancy.

Final construction checks

  • Record final clear dimensions and the area occupied by furnishings; retain the drawing of hidden services and permitted attachment points.
  • Confirm full door release, protected service access and the ability to open both inspection panels.
  • Check cured seams and backing dryness. This lining is not a waterproof wet room.

Before introducing an animal

  • Record environmental measurements at the intended occupied heights and retreats. A lined room is not a certified animal habitat; resolve its suitability through the separate husbandry plan.
  • Use the exact animal’s care guide to select the heating, lighting and furnishings. Run the complete setup, record measurements at the places the animal will use and resolve any unmet requirements before move-in.

Review your preparation checklist

Maintain and inspect the enclosure

  • Inspect behind the two lower covers and beneath the removable wear floor for concealed moisture. Investigate changes promptly rather than adding more sealant over them.
  • Use the panel manufacturer's compatible cleaners and repair procedure. Rehouse the animal during adhesive, coating or building repairs.

Limitations and decisions to resolve

  • This conversion does not provide drainage, waterproof tanking, floor reinforcement, insulation design, structural partitions or mains wiring.
  • The existing room, local requirements and selected finish system determine the final details. Materials and area alone do not establish species suitability.
