This conversion uses an existing Exo Terra Natural Terrarium Medium Tall PT2612. Its published size is 24 inches wide, 18 inches deep and 24 inches high. The project retains the factory glass, doors, screen top, locks and cable openings. It adds a removable, floor-supported climbing arrangement rather than a permanent background or suspended heavy branches. Select an animal whose space and environmental needs can be met after the furnishings reduce the usable interior.

Before you start

  • Measure the actual interior width and depth, height above the chosen floor material, clear door opening and distance below the screen. Manufacturer nominal dimensions are not internal clear dimensions.
  • Start with an empty terrarium. An animal already using it needs appropriate temporary housing during cleaning, rearrangement and empty environmental trials.
  • Decide which occupied surfaces need warmth, light, shade and shelter from the animal's care plan. Draw those destinations before choosing decorative materials.
  • This conversion adds no silicone, foam or paint. There is no new finish to cure. If the existing terrarium has damaged seams, glass or locks, obtain a manufacturer-approved repair or replacement before continuing.

Inspect the existing shell

Remove all furnishings and examine the glass edges, seams, door hinges and top frame under good light. Operate each lock before cleaning hides a damaged edge. Check that the terrarium sits as its manufacturer intends on a stable support. Do not use this conversion to conceal a failing seam behind a new background.

Restore working access

Clean the door edges, front ventilation strip and screen attachment points with a compatible method. Remove accumulated material from places where the doors meet the frame. Rinse away cleaning residue and allow the interior to dry. Confirm that the top can be removed and refitted without forcing a latch.

Measure the available space

Record the clear floor dimensions and the height beneath the screen, then measure the door opening. Include any existing background that you intend to keep. Measure the proposed climbing structure separately. A structure that fits within the exterior product dimensions may still be too large to pass through the doors or sit inside the frame.

Build a temporary floor layout

Cut a cardboard template to the measured floor and mark the door swing and ventilation line. Place the proposed base, retreat and drinking fitting on it outside the terrarium. Leave a service route to each item. Remove a piece if its only possible position blocks another item's cleaning access.

Map the climbing routes

Draw the structure from the front, including its highest reachable point and the spaces below it. Mark where the animal could rest, turn and descend. Compare those locations with the planned light and heat clearances. Do not count empty air above an inaccessible branch as useful climbing space.

Prepare the removable structure

Assemble the selected climbing system according to its instructions and verify its capacity for the intended use. Check that its base supports it without pressure against the glass. Inspect each junction for sharp ends or a trapping slot. Do not replace its specified fixings with improvised wire ties or suction cups.

Test passage through the doors

Carry the structure through the opening with the terrarium empty and all power disconnected. If it must be taken apart, identify a short, repeatable disassembly sequence now. Avoid an arrangement that requires removing a glass door for every deep clean. Check that your hands have enough room to lift it without scraping the glass.

Position the climbing assembly

Install the chosen floor material and place the structure on its intended support. Keep concentrated hard points away from the glass; use only a load-spreading base suitable for the system. Confirm that the structure remains stable with the door open and closed. A gentle stability check supplements, but does not replace, a suitable load specification.

Add cover without hiding problems

Position the retreat and removable cover around the climbing route. Preserve an inspection view behind each piece and keep foliage away from moving hinges. Any plant must be identified and selected for the intended animal before use. Heavy pots stay on supported bases; the screen roof is not used as a planter shelf.

Preserve ventilation and cable closure

The PT2612 provides front ventilation, a removable screen and closable wire inlets. Keep those functions accessible. Route the required cables through the intended inlets and close the unused openings. Check the space behind the factory background for hidden routes to an inlet, then retain or remove the background according to its actual fit.

Mount lighting and heating securely

Use the selected fixtures' approved supports and their exact clearance requirements. Establish the distance from the lamp to the highest place the animal could occupy, including a plant stem or retreat roof. Keep hot equipment inaccessible and plugs outside the enclosure. Do not rest a loose lamp on a branch or modify its electrical cord.

Place probes at occupied heights

Secure an independent probe at the intended warm location and another at a contrasting occupied location. Add humidity monitoring where it will answer the care question, rather than wherever a cable happens to reach. Photograph the placement. Keep probe leads out of climbing loops and away from the door's closing edge.

Run the completed layout empty

Operate repeated daytime and nighttime cycles with the final floor, plants and fittings installed. Record the conditions at occupied heights and inside the retreat. If the selected requirements cannot be met without blocking ventilation or compromising clearances, change the equipment or enclosure. Recheck after moving a substantial branch or plant.

Rehearse cleaning and containment

Remove and replace the drinking fitting, retreat and climbing assembly using the planned sequence. Confirm that the probes remain secure and the structure returns to the recorded position. Close both doors and lock the top, then inspect the entire perimeter and cable inlets. Introduce the animal only when access, containment and environmental checks pass.

Final construction checks

  • The climbing structure fits through the service opening or has a practical removal sequence, and its base and connections are suitable for the intended loads.
  • Doors and screen lock normally after furnishing. Cover, cables and the existing background have not created an escape route or inaccessible trapping space.
  • The highest reachable point maintains the selected fixture's required clearance.

Before introducing an animal

  • Repeated measurements meet the animal's care plan at the locations it can use.
  • Use the exact animal’s care guide to select the heating, lighting and furnishings. Run the complete setup, record measurements at the places the animal will use and resolve any unmet requirements before move-in.

Maintain and inspect the enclosure

  • Clean behind removable cover and inspect branch junctions when servicing the enclosure. Replace damaged fittings before they become structural supports for other pieces.
  • Keep front ventilation and the screen clear. Recheck cable closures after replacing probes or lighting.
  • Repeat the access and environmental checks after plant growth, a changed perch or a replacement lamp alters the occupied space.

Limitations and decisions to resolve

  • This is a reversible interior conversion, not a stronger glass enclosure. No structural load rating is assigned to its panels, screen or background.
  • The nominal 24-inch height does not establish suitability for a particular climbing species or life stage.
  • The guide does not specify plant safety, temperatures, humidity or UVB targets; those must come from an appropriate species-specific care plan.
