Before you start

  • Nominal size is 36 W × 18 D × 36 H inches. Record the delivered door system, stand/support configuration, drain count and outlet specification, usable interior dimensions and the maker’s applicable support and sealant instructions before selecting fittings or calculating wet load. The public listing mixes configurations; these values are not established here.
  • Confirm interior dimensions, door material, drain number and outlet size, support capacities and any sealant cure with the maker. Order assembled to avoid improvising flat-pack sealing.
  • Measure interior floor area A in square inches. For this layout, the initial drainage-layer allowance is A × 2 / 1728 cubic feet, based on a two-inch construction depth. It is an editable project allowance, not an animal-care requirement.

Confirm the delivered configuration

Compare the enclosure with the written order before installing plants. Identify each drain, door latch, screen and support component. Check that any assembly sealant has completed the maker's exact curing period. If its chemistry or cure requirements are unknown, obtain that information before wet testing; do not add an unidentified sealant over a questionable joint.

Establish service access

Position the empty enclosure and its support so every drain connection can be inspected and the collection container removed. Measure the full installed footprint and height, including doors and fittings. Put the empty container in place and carry it to the intended disposal location once. Solve awkward lifting or a blocked route before it contains dirty water.

Connect the drainage

Install the specified hose and fittings on the factory outlets using their supplied instructions. Support the hose so it cannot pull sideways on a drain. Keep joints visible and accessible. Do not guess a thread standard or add a sealant to a gasket joint that does not call for it.

Test the empty water route

With electrical equipment disconnected, deliver a measured amount of water to the floor and observe it reach the collection container. Inspect the drain body, underside and hose joints with dry paper nearby to reveal drips. Stop if water remains where it should drain or escapes onto the support. Resolve the cause before hiding the floor.

Mark the bed and access heights

Measure the clear floor area and mark the planned drainage and substrate levels on a temporary external reference. Fit the inspection chamber and verify that its cap will remain reachable above the finished bed. Open it while standing at the normal service position. An inspection port behind a permanent branch is not useful access.

Lay out removable planting modules

Arrange three empty pots on a floor template with the animal's required furnishings. Check door passage and drain-cap access. Each plant should be removable independently. Keep large loads on approved supports.

Prepare the drainage media

Prepare the chosen drainage product according to its package and measure the quantity added. Zoo Med describes HydroBalls beneath a separate substrate layer. Keep loose media out of the factory outlet using the matched drain guard. Record the amount installed so the actual load can be compared with the support plan.

Fit the separator

Place terrarium mesh over the drainage layer and fold its margins so substrate cannot easily bypass the edge. Fit it around the inspection chamber without covering the cap or outlet service area. Check the seam at each corner. A carefully fitted separator makes later drain inspection more useful by reducing loose soil reaching the lower layer.

Add the selected planting medium

Add the measured substrate in controlled portions, keeping the inspection access visible. Stop at the planned depth and record the remaining usable height. Do not use a decorative mound to conceal a drain problem. Keep the front door and ventilation areas clear of loose material so routine watering does not carry soil into them.

Install identified plants

Check plant identity and suitability for the intended animal before planting. Position the prepared removable pots or modules, then water each in a measured way. Verify that water leaves the pot and can reach the enclosure drain. Keep the service access open and avoid attaching heavy pots to unverified wall or roof supports.

Add the animal's removable fittings

Fit the required retreat, drinking arrangement and climbing structure around the planting modules. Confirm that each support bears where intended and that the highest reachable point respects fixture clearances. Inspect spaces behind pots for trapping gaps. Leave room to inspect the drain without first removing the animal's main retreat.

Install and protect equipment

Mount complete listed lights and other equipment with their approved supports. Keep water delivery away from fixtures and electrical connections, and route cables through the intended closures. Confirm that plants cannot grow directly into a hot fixture. Place independent probes at occupied locations and document them before foliage makes them difficult to find.

Test a full watering cycle

With no animal present, apply the planned maximum routine watering amount and observe the collection system. Measure the water received and inspect all connections again. Check the container's remaining capacity and establish a service interval from actual use. Do not add unattended automatic watering until its possible delivery and failure behavior have been assessed.

Run the planted enclosure empty

Operate repeated day and night cycles with plants and equipment in their final positions. Record conditions at occupied locations and watch how the bed changes after watering. Confirm that the selected care targets can be met while preserving the intended ventilation. Resolve persistent pooling, leakage or inaccessible maintenance before introducing an animal.

Rehearse drain and plant maintenance

Remove a drain cap, inspect the guard, empty the collection container and lift one planting module. Check that the remaining bed stays contained and equipment remains secure. Write down the shortest practical service sequence and the observed water volumes. Keep the configuration record so a replacement hose, pot or lamp can be assessed against the actual installation.

Final construction checks

  • The manufacturer's exact configuration and any cure requirements are documented; factory drains and every connection pass the empty and furnished water trials.
  • The measured wet load is within the confirmed enclosure and support capacities. Water collection can be emptied before reaching its working limit.
  • Drain guards, access caps and plant modules remain removable.

  • Environmental readings at occupied locations meet the selected animal's requirements through repeated cycles.
